The History and Leadership of the RICS

The RICS can be traced all the way back to 1792 when a group called the Surveyors Club was formed. The first meeting of the RICS was at the Westminster Palace Hotel in London.

This group created a professional association with a charter, resolutions and bylaws.

By the year 1868 the group expanded and they established an official organisation with a formal structure. The structure was created at the RICS meetings which was still at the Westminster Palace Hotel. Elected officers and a president was appointed. The RICS established offices at the house and these offices still serve as a regional office in the UK today. The RICS is now in a 146 countries.

The structure of the RICS is now managed by governing councils, which is a variety of boards and committees meeting internationally.

RICS leadership focuses on corporate responsibility and ethical business practices as core principles that guide all RICS policies and decisions. It is mandatory that all members abide by these principals and uphold the standards set out in the RICS bylaws and procedure.
